The Phoenix Clock plots the Chronicon of Jason Breshears as a spiral. Time is measured
in 138-year turns because the Chronicon logs a 138-year orbit for planet Phoenix, the
catastrophe object that crosses the inner solar system each time in May. Each turn is
exactly 138 years, so every Phoenix return lands on the same radial spoke, forming a straight line
of markers from the centre outward, from the Great Flood of 2239 BCE to the red dust
fall of 1902. The next transit is dated 15–16 May 2040, and a second body, the Nemesis
X Object on a 792-year orbit, is dated to November 2046.
2040 CE — Return of the Phoenix (the next return, 15–16 May 2040)
The Chronicon dates the next transit to 15–16 May 2040: the sun darkened by planet Phoenix, a lithospheric displacement, the oceans slipping their basins, hundreds of coastal cities shoved undersea, worldwide volcanism, continental quakes and mudfloods, red rains and cosmic dust fallout. The Sixth Seal of the Apocalypse, the sixth sky dragon of Mother Shipton, the Black Sun of the Hopi, Ragnarok, the Day of Darkness.

1902 CE — Red dust over four continents
The 45th visitation logged in the Chronicon. Phoenix returned with its immense debris field and a bizarre dust rained on Australia, Europe, western Russia, Britain and the Atlantic, in places fifty tons per square mile, cosmic dust pushed off Phoenix by the solar wind as it passed between Venus and Earth. Charles Fort called 1902 'the other Dark Age'. In May, Mount Pelee annihilated the city of Saint-Pierre in minutes.

1764 CE — Hoffman watches it cross the sun
The first modern scientific record of the intruder planet. In May, astronomers reported black objects passing between Earth and the sun; Phoenix crossed in partial transit, covering a fifth of the sun's surface, watched by hundreds of thousands of Europeans with the naked eye. Astronomer Hoffman of Gotha tracked it by telescope travelling north to south over the ecliptic, a trajectory no planet keeps.

1626 CE — Meteoric rain over China
Chinese records log the sun darkening and a shower of meteorites that fell on the crowd assembled to watch the rainmaking priests; 'some thought that it was the end of the world.' The Chronicon marks 1626 as the close of the 552-year Phoenix Cycle system of epochs, and opens a Cursed Earth count of 414 years from the purchase of Manhattan in May 1626 to the fate of that city in May 2040.

1488 CE — Mother Shipton is born
Phoenix passed unseen, and in the same year Ursula Southeil, Mother Shipton, the Northern Prophetess, was born in England. Her verses describe two sky dragons in the Last Days: the first darkening the sun in 2040, the second, Wormwood, arriving in 2046. The Chronicon reads her as the cycle describing itself.

1350 CE — An unseen return
The Chronicon logs the orbit and nothing more: no sighting survives. The world it passed over was burying a third of itself; the Black Death, four years old in Europe, did not let go until 1351. The intruder planet would not be seen again until 1764, when hundreds of thousands watched it cross the sun.

1212 CE — The Children's Crusade vanishings
Mass human vanishings and earthquakes in the Middle East sit on this spoke. In France a voice set fifty thousand children marching east, the Children's Crusade, and the chroniclers record that the columns of children vanished en masse. The Chronicon counts two Cursed Earth periods of 414 years from this year to 2040.

Phoenix completed its orbit with no surviving record of a sighting; the Chronicon allows that it may simply have crossed while Earth was far along its own path. Europe was climbing out of its Dark Age, and the record-keepers were few.

936 CE — The Maya are gone
No sighting survives; 460 years after the fall of Rome, the Chronicon notes, literacy itself had nearly gone out. In the Americas the 138 years opened by the 798 transit close here: the last Long Count date anywhere is 909, and by this return the classic Maya civilisation is finished.

798 CE — Quakes topple the Maya
Quakes, a dark sun and flooding in the Mayan cities. In 790, one hundred and ninety Mayan cities commemorated the passing katun; by 810, twelve. Monuments stop, centres empty, and the Chronicon opens a 138-year count from this transit to the end of Mayan civilisation at the next.

The height of the Dark Age. The Chronicon logs the return and concedes the silence: records were not kept, and those that were made did not survive. The cycle does not pause for historiography.

The only year in all of history, past or future, when both intruder planets crossed the inner system together: Phoenix completing its 138-year orbit as the Nemesis X Object descended back into the Deep. Kent recorded dragons and beasts fighting in the air and a rain of great drops of blood; a star over Winchester trailed a ray ending in a flaming dragon; earthquakes levelled Olympia. The Dark Age begins here.

Phoenix passed with almost no witnesses left literate enough to write it down. One did: Lycosthenes' Chronicon records for this exact year that 'a terrible sign appeared in the sky, shaped like a pillar', in the time of the emperor Theodosius.

Old Briton annals record that it 'rained blood in divers parts of this kingdom, and a terrible bloody sword was seen in the air for three nights'. In Mexico the circular pyramid of Cuicuilco was buried under lava, carbon-dated to within a year of this transit.

The arithmetic puts the return here; no record of a sighting survives. The Chronicon's nearest catastrophe sits fifty-four years on: the pandemic of 162 that broke the Han Dynasty and opened a four-century Asian dark age.

Phoenix entered and nearly transited, and the earthquake it raised killed thirty thousand around the Aegean during the Battle of Actium; Rome changed hands on a Phoenix year. Cassius Dio records a rain mixed with blood over Egypt and a dragon of incredible size in the sky. On the far side of the planet the Yucatan was ruined: the Olmec carved their final Long Count date at Tres Zapotes this year, and are not heard from again.

The Chronicon logs the completed orbit and notes that no record indicates it was seen. The year's violence was terrestrial: Antiochus IV sacked the Temple in Jerusalem, three years before the Maccabean Revolt.

The Frisian Oera Linda manuscript records disasters across Europe for this year, the one witness the Doomsday Chronology cites for a return that otherwise crossed unrecorded, in the generation when Alexander's successors were carving up his empire.

445 BCE — Thirteen days of fire
Phoenix passed out of alignment now, too far for direct transit, but the record of the year is grim: a disaster lasting thirteen days, forest fires, rains and flooding, put at 830,000 dead in the reign of Artaxerxes I, ascribed by de Jonge to a 'comet'. Six years later Athens dedicated the Parthenon, carrying the Flood and the War of the Giants on its friezes.

583 BCE — The sun darkens the battlefield
Lydia and Media met in battle and the sun went out over the field, halting both armies; they concluded peace on the spot. Thales of Miletus had predicted the darkening two years before, and Greek philosophy rode on the fame of it. This was no eclipse of the moon, the Chronicon holds, but the appointed transit, in May, 1,656 years after the Flood; Rashi wrote that every 1,656 years a similar disaster occurs.

An Assyrian inscription has a New World Age beginning; the Kingdom of Israel fell to Assyria the same year. Chinese astronomers logged the event, and Rome's annalists preserved that late in the reign of Romulus the sun darkened; Augustine conceded the darkness did not obey 'the natural laws of the heavenly bodies'.

859 BCE — The Winged Disk expected
The Assyrians were waiting for it. Palace seals and wall reliefs from this reign show the empire expecting the return of the Winged Disk, the old sign of the Phoenix, and it appears on the relief commemorating King Jehu's submission. In Israel, fire fell from heaven and an earthquake followed a day later; Elijah passed his mantle and vanished into the sky.

King David, in his sixth year at Jerusalem, saw the Angel of Death standing between heaven and earth like a sword over the city, the same fiery-sword imagery the Chronicon traces to the Phoenix's first witnessed appearance in 3895 BCE. Across the ocean, a comet or great meteorite struck the Badlands of North America within three years of this date.

Direct transit. The sun darkened as it had 552 years earlier at the fall of the Old Bronze Age, and 552 before that at the Flood. Nebuchadnezzar I recorded a 'comet' that darkened the sun over Babylon; Egypt's new 20th Dynasty opened under an immense black cloud, a blood-red sun and a rain of dust, the same dust that fell in 1902. The Mediterranean Dark Age begins on this spoke, and the record goes quiet for three centuries.

In the annals of Mursilis II of Hatti, as the king marched to war, 'the sun became obscured'. Archilochus wrote that Zeus turned midday into night; Seneca and Euripides kept the memory in Thyestes and Electra; Atreus predicted the darkening and won a throne on the arithmetic. Assyria annexed Babylon the same year and took the Winged Disk as its imperial seal.

Phoenix passed and shed the debris that became the Joshua Comet Group. The Midrashim record the sun's motion altered; a Samaritan chronicle has a new star at Joshua's long day; Servius wrote that the sky turned bloody red. Venus itself was bathed in Phoenix dust and grew a tail: the smoking star of the Toltecs, the bearded star of the Chaldeans.

Crete, Thera, the Cyclades: the whole Aegean shaken, with tsunamis on the coasts. Pharaoh Ahmose's Tempest Stele records a darkness in the west, houses floating on the water, no one able to light a torch. The Chinese Bamboo Books log yellow fog, a dim sun, then three suns, frost in July. India goes silent for a thousand years.

1687 BCE — The Ogygian Flood
Direct transit between the orbits of Venus and Earth, darkening the sun. The Ogygian Flood drowned the Peloponnese; the Xia Dynasty fell under yellow fogs and a darkened sun; a twenty-five-year darkness and famine sit in the records of the Mediterranean and the Americas alike. After this year, the Chronicon notes, no dynasty on Earth called itself Children of the Sun again.

The Chronicon logs the completed orbit; the great violence of this era belongs to its neighbours, the Nemesis X transit of 1915 and the fire that took Sodom and the Indus cities in 1849. On the spoke itself, the record is quiet.

1963 BCE — Night turned to day
A temporary pole shift. The Vedic Ramayana preserves it exactly: night suddenly turned to day, people wakened in their beds by daylight, astronomers bewildered to find the oil lamps still full; then the sun plunged and night returned. A Babylonian omen text reads: 'If the sun comes out in the night and the country sees it light everywhere: there will be disorder in the country everywhere.'

The first return after the Flood. The Chronicon logs the orbit into a world with almost no one left to record it: the century of resettlement, when the survivors' grandchildren were still counting time from the year the sun went dark.

Year 1656 Annus Mundi. Seven days before the Deluge, Phoenix was seen entering the inner system, growing larger in the sky from the direction of Venus; it transited between Earth and the sun and cast the planet in shadow. The world turned upside down: a pole shift, continental quakes and mudfloods, hundreds of cities shoved undersea, worldwide volcanism, red rains and cosmic dust fallout, the vapor canopy collapsing out of the sky. Every culture on the planet remembers this year; over a thousand flood traditions agree.

The beginning of Earth's geometrical timelines. Nemesis, the old binary companion, implodes, hurling Earth, Luna, the Dark Satellite, the Nemesis X Object, Electra and Phoenix toward Sol. The Great Year system of 600-year periods counts from this year: 7,344 years to 2106 CE.

A third of the Anunnaki quit their appointments and require worship of themselves; war breaks out among the planets of the Daystar and the old system begins to fail. Exactly 600 years after the Nemesis Cataclysm.

The smaller sun explodes and folds in on itself; the pre-Adamic world is destroyed as a dust cloud hides the sun. Nemesis X Object drifts into its 792-year orbit and Phoenix into its 138-year orbit, the two clocks this chronology runs on. Named as the Phoenix's first year; the Gnostic texts remember the world destroyed, to return in the Last Days.

After 270 years adrift, frozen solid, Earth settles into its present orbit between Venus and Mars, an intruder planet, the Titius-Bode spacing broken to admit it. The Moon appears in orbit, arrived out of the destroyed Nemesis system. The year runs 360 days, and keeps that length until 713 BCE.
